Preparing to Ride Your Electric Bike this Winter

Juicy Electric Bikes in Buxton, Winter

It’s winter, but that doesn’t mean you should leave your e-bike languishing in the garage. Here are a few of our recommendations for you, the conscientious e-bike rider, to keep in mind in the coming wintry months. Take a look at our our short video for some simple and easy bike maintenance tasks...

 Giving your bike some love

We do like displacement activities, especially when it's cold outside.  When it's too cold to ride why not warm up by getting pumping?  Here's our video for some simple and easy maintenance tasks...

Lithium Batteries and the Cold

Juicy Electric Bike Battery

Time for some science: the electrical resistance of a lithium battery cell (like those found in your Juicy Bike battery) decreases as it warms up. So, store your battery in warm conditions and you’ll notice that it ‘leaks’ its charge a little bit faster. And thus needs charging a tad more frequently.

But the same concept applies in reverse in the cold - cold conditions increase your battery’s electrical resistance. So if you store your battery in a cold environment (such as the garage), it’ll remain fully charged for longer. Camera manufacturers go as far as to recommend storing their lithium batteries in the fridge to prolong their life.

So while the cool is good for storage, always remember to warm your battery to room temperature before charging. Charging your battery from frozen can cause damage.

The downside to winter temperatures is a decrease in the effective range of your battery. In cold conditions, increased electrical resistance makes for a less effective discharge, so be aware that your battery may only provide around 70% of its usual range if you’re cycling on a chilly morning.

Safety on the Road

Thanks to the shorter days, it’s doubly important to be seen when cycling in winter. Before you set out, check to make sure your lights are working and aren’t obscured by any bits of luggage or clothing. And If you’re going to be regularly riding in darker conditions, it’s definitely worth investing in a few items of reflective clothing to boot.

Always take extra care when riding in wet or icy conditions. First of all, check your tyres and brakes for wear – you’re going to need all the help you can get Road markings and manhole covers can be especially hazardous, so take extra care when crossing them (and definitely try not turn while doing so). And always remember: leave yourself longer to stop when braking in wet or icy conditions.

It’s also worth considering whereabouts you ride on the road. We recommend taking up the primary position and owning your space. Never assume you’ve been spotted by signalling cars – especially on cold mornings where commuters might still be peering through a misted windscreen or squinting into the sun.

So there you have it - a few tips to help you stay on the road in the coming months and to do so safely. Don’t let the cold and wet deny you the pleasure of a beautiful and thrilling ride this winter – they’re are a genuine treat.
