At this time of year many of us are searching for the best solution to improved health and fitness.  As the last festival treats are finished off many are consumed by overwhelming fear of how long the road stretches before us to recover our pre-festive bodies once more.  Here are five good reasons why an electric bike can help you back inside your favourite clothes

ways to health

What are the benefits of an electric bike over normal bikes?

1. You’ll Actually Use It

Buying things is easy – a gym membership, an exercise bike, a Shakeweight (a what?) – enjoy a free bit of dopamine for doing something noble, but with none of the attendant sweating. A great deal, right?

It’s using those things consistently to improve your health that’s the hard part, and bikes are no exception. According to the research, only 46% of conventional bikes are ridden even once or twice per week[1]. For many, the mental image of inching up a hill, lungs and legs on fire, buffeted by wind, sleet, short of breath and short of time, is enough to nip the idea of cycling in the bud. But think again...

Leigh from Juicy Bike with his dogPictured: Leigh. Not bad at fixing bikes (with Wilma who is)

We had a chat with Leigh Smith (Eco Republic New Mills chief denizen) to get the skilled mechanic’s perspective on electric cycling. Unmissable tips and shocking anecdotes ensue:

Juicy: Hi Leigh. How’re you?

Leigh: I’m fine, thanks.

Good! What exactly do you do around here? What’s your title?
Well, my official title at one point was Senior Sales Associate, but at some point the company director waved a Workshop Manager’s contract in my face. So I suppose I’m one of those.  Right now I'm working towards becoming the Store Manager for what is the Juicy Bike Trade Showroom - quite a job balancing providing a good retail experience, imeadiate and remote support, managing work through the workshop and feeding into the design and manufacturing process.  I'm not sure there's a job description that could cope - either for me or for anyone working here - we all do so many things!

Atmosphere Electric Bike Centre Bristol

Electric Bikes are a young industry, so truly experienced figures are few and far-between. Luckily, Bristolians have Alistair of Atmosphere Electric Bikes – one of the very first dedicated e-bike shops in the UK. We dropped in to see what’s happening with our friends in Brizzle...

Juicy: Morning Alistair! What do you do at Atmosphere?

Alistair: I’m the owner!

[Following the akward silence we adopt a more deferential tone and the interview picks up again...]

Sunny trail with cyclists

Riding a bike used to mean knowing the lay of the land. The cyclist of yore would rely on an innate sense of direction and keen memory, striking out onto the open road without so much as a glance at an Ordnance Survey ...Possibly.

Come to think of it, there is the danger of just hanging-out on the same old routes because the real gems are not so easy to find (in between sessions of getting lost).

If your navigation skills have atrophied with the rise of GPS then chances are you need Google Maps to find your own kitchen. And you probably want other people to do all the mental heavy lifting, finding the quickest, quietest and/or most scenic cycle routes for you to enjoy.

Once again, technology comes to our rescue. There are heaps of route planners competing for your attention, and almost all in both web and mobile app form. Many of them are useful, but we know your time is precious, so we tried ‘em, ranked ‘em, and we’re going to give it to you straight: the four very best route planners available to the modern cyclist.  EDIT: December 2016 - Make that FIVE - we think we've found the best (and it's free too)

Child at a computer

Deciding how best to invest a pension pot cache is anything but childs play, whatever Gideon (Chancellor G Osborne) says. If you’re thinking: an extravagant party, a gold-plated smartphone, an endangered animal as a housepet, then just hold on a moment.  Science has confirmed what we all knew deep down anyway -- that the key to happiness is to spend money not on possessions, but on experiences. So we thought we’d take a look at the most common windfall-spends to see which will provide the most (and best) experiences:

Electric Bike Mythbusters, commuting by bike

Is an electric bike a sensible, green investment?

Like any revolutionary, zeitgeist changing mode of wonder-transport, the Electric Bike is subject to its fair share of stigma.

Electric bike riders have to contend with the accusation that their preferred mode of transport is cheating, their electric powered bicycle isn't really saving energy and the implication can be that the ebike rider is self-righteous for even bothering. But how do these myths hold up under scrutiny?  Is it wise to invest? Read on:

Young woman with her bike outside Lowry

We're bashing more myths!

Last time on Electric Bike Mythbusters, we tackled head-on a few of the unfortunate myths that make the lives of e-bike riders slightly more awkward every day. "Isn't that cheating?" bystanders ask; "Aren't you just shifting all of your emissions over to the power stations?"; "Did we really fight two world wars so you could ride around on a scooter while pretending to be a cyclist?"

We like to think that the above myths were well and truly obliterated by the previous article (and we're right), but alas, others remain. Here they are:

Changes to UK electric bike regulations come into effect during April 2015 and again in January 2016.  Here's our summary of what you need to know.

Two British Policemen with Electric Bikes

Brief history of UK ebike law - Updated 28-01-2016

Red tape has been blessedly absent from electric bike ownership. Unlike most other forms of motorised transport, e-bikes don’t require registration, license plates or insurance, and anyone over the age of 14 can ride them legally in the UK.

Unfortunately, disparities between EU and UK legislation have long allowed for a ‘grey area’ when it comes to the specifics. Now (at long last) the Department for Transport has moved to harmonise Britain’s own electric bike laws with the rest of Europe. But what does that mean for me and you?

Electric Bike Accessories Dapper Cap

We love Kickstarter. Creative people present cool projects and anyone interested helps to fund them. Predictably, it's a goldmine for clever and beautiful bike stuff. Gadgets, accessories, apparel – all sorts of innovative products that might be deemed a bit too risky by the average board of directors. And since each project is the independent creation of someone like you or me, we can enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling of helping out an entrepreneur. Who needs middle-men?

We dove in to find out which items make the best fit for the enlightened e-bike rider:

How does a true philosopher choose an electric bike?

We asked our most philosophically inclined staff member if there was anything she'd like to share in our latest newsletter. Here's a bit of sage advice from Sophie:

The oil-flecked interior of an electric bike shop may seem an unlikely source of philosophical enlightenment, but this one has turned out to be a surprising basket of metaphysical revelations.

British Electric Bike Association

Juicy are pleased to be members of the British Electric Bicycle Association (BEBA), the UK’s leading representative body on e-bikes. There are all sorts of good reasons to get your e-bike from a BEBA member, but the best is this: you can be confident of a high quality bike with full, comprehensive aftercare.

Since BEBA only offer membership to manufacturers with great reputations (and who meet their particularly high standard for customer care), you can treat the BEBA logo as a seal of confidence.

Here’s the second best reason to go with a BEBA member (like Juicy): our special BEBA insurance policy that’s a cracking great deal. Read on.
