Bike frame colour angst - the new OCD

Our number one priority is building rugged, practical electric bikes.

Fortunately for you, aesthetics are something else we can’t help but take seriously (vain as we are), so making our bikes beautiful has always come a close second.

Introducing our new colour: Heath.

It's a little known fact that as we mature our ability to perceive subtle colour shades improves. As we grow into our teens and beyond we develop a language of colour that is highly complex, very personal and socially, extremely important.

A closeup of the latest colour in the Juicy Bike frame colour pallet, Heath, reminiscent of Derbyshire heathland.

Have you ever wondered why Lego® Bricks are so brightly coloured? Children only gradually develop the ability to perceive colour shading. Beyond the playground we rarely ask one another "what's your favourite colour?" - time's just too short for a grown-up answer.
It just has to be the "right" colour.

Making a great looking bike is a tough line to tow - we want them to stand out from the crowd, but without having to shout about it. These efforts generally show up in the details, like in our choice of tan for our grips, saddles and panniers. We liked how subtle, neutral tones didn’t compete with the colour of the frame, but found black and grey to have the effect of 'deadening' it, leaving the bike looking sad and dull. Tan, however, ‘warmed' the frame just enough to leave it looking vibrant, and in a way that's tough to nail down. These little touches add up to a bike that just looks appealing next to the standard e-bike. It’s not just nostalgia that made vintage bikes look lovely, it’s a science - one that we feel has lost out to tacky decals and silver paint.

So, when we decide to introduce a new frame colour, you know it’s after a whole lot of deliberation. The natural palette of our bikes is based on the local Peak District countryside, because we think a natural palette always looks great no matter the setting, and it nicely meets our goal of bikes that look smart, but don't abandon colour to do it. Heath is our newest hue and we think it's a corker. A metallic with warm lilac tones, Heath strikes the perfect balance between stylish, interesting and understated. Plus, the range of colours available for each of our bikes is broader than ever, so you can get the bike you want looking as you want it.

So, we say it's time to end the tyranny of silver, black, and grey, and give colour a chance. Bikes after all, are not just for children.
