CHOOSE YOUR PERFECT BIKE

Which is better (behind the hype)? – Gtech vs Juicy

With an extensive advertising campaign spanning TV, print media and the web, and reviews in the Daily Mail and London Evening Standard, the chances that Gtech’s new eBike has come to your attention are higher than that of any other pedelec currently available in the UK. But is the exposure really justified? Does the Gtech deserve to be Britain’s most heard of electric bike, and how does it compare to the Peak District’s own brand, Juicy Bike?

We’re confident we know which one comes out as the overall winner. Naturally, we’re biased, but we also think the facts and stats speak for themselves. And so, we’ve stirred up a little contest...

Two electric bikes go head to head

Pitted against the Gtech City in a head-to-head specification table below based on that used by popular independent eBike info site Pedelecs, is the challenger: our very own equivalent, the Juicy Sport (or Classic) LITE. They await your judgement:

Time to look a little closer

With similarities and differences in abundance, there can be no clear winner just yet. It’s time to dig a little deeper. To help you decide, here’s some more in depth analysis:

Motor

Both brands come equipped with a 36V brushless motor in the rear hub. Positioning the motor here allows for greater stability and increased torque, compared with a front drive system, or a crank drive, which does over complicate and can place increased strain on the chain and gear-set.

Gears

All Juicy Bikes comes with a 6-speed Shimano derailleur and stainless steel chain for easy maintenance. Gtech have opted for a belt drive system, with one single gear. Although this helps keep the weight of the bike down, it makes pedalling up hills significantly harder. Additionally, a belt drive system is likely to be a stumbling block for maintenance, with most cycle mechanics lacking experience and know-how in working with these. (Hint: alingment is crucial to longevity of belt drives).

Controls

Gtech provide 2 levels of pedal assistance, as well as the option to turn off the motor altogether and “go it alone”.  Juicys sport 3 levels of assistance as standard, an on/off setting and additionally, a startup assist throttle to help with stationary starts.  This affords greater flexibility, saving more energy for either battery or rider as required.

Battery

Both brands have opted for lithium-ion batteries, considered to be the safest and most efficient currently available on the mass market. But while Juicy supply 300WH batteries as standard with all bikes (though higher capacity options are available as optional upgrades), Gtech have opted for a 200WH “bottle” battery. That’s significantly less energetic than Juicy’s, and although both claim similar miles only the WH figure can usefully be used to compare range.

Additionally, the position of the battery on the Gtech – just behind the front stem – means a higher centre of gravity, and therefore less stability when riding or walking with your bike.

Weight

The Gtech weighs in at 16kg. This is lighter than the equivalent model in the Juicy roster, which comes in at 24.5kg. However, take the battery off, and you’re down to 21kg. Take away the removable extras – rack, mudguards, lights – that Juicy provide for free, and you’re left with 19kg.

With this in mind, it’s clear that the difference is not as stark is it first appears.

And if your main priority HAS to be a lightweight bike then, for just a little more, you might like to take a peek at our Ticket: an electric bike weighing just 14.9 Kgs.

Extras

Juicy provide lights, mudguards, and a sturdy rack as standard on their bikes. These are available for the Gtech but must be purchased as additional add ons.

Warranty

Gtechs come with a 2 year warranty as standard. The 1 year warranty on Juicy Bikes can be converted to 2 years for an additional £69.

 GTech Advert Picture

Pictures paint a thousand words and these GTech models are clearly enjoying their experiences in front of the camera.

Here's less than a thousand words - a recent testimonial from a customer of Juicy who had previously tried a Gtech and which makes very interesting reading:

I have today bought my new Juicy Sport Bike from their friendly trade centre at New Mills. I had over the past two weeks tried Gtech's new electric bike. Unfortunately (or as it proved to be fortunately) I had to send back the Gtech bike as the 21" frame was just too large for me.
However the electric bike experience for a noncyclist was great and I thought that it was a shame that I could not get into a comfortable riding position on the Gtech bike.
How lucky did this turn out to be.
Having now decided that I should continue to look for a more suitable electric assist bike, I found that Juicy Bikes has loads of good user reviews and that their headquarters are only 1 hour from home.
Research on the internet finished and fancying a look at their Sports Click, I set off for Juicy Bikes. I was greeted by Sarah, the owners wife, and immediately given a cup of coffee and an offer of a test ride on the new Juicy Sports Click. What a revelation!

I had thought that Gtech's bike was good but delivered a somewhat harsh and uncomfortable ride. The Juicy bike was light years better, very comfortable, more power, easier to ride and looked fantastic compared to the Gtech bike. I was bitten and quickly rode back to Juicy headquarters to conclude the sale.
On returning home with my new Juicy bike fitted with pannier bags and an ultracool leather sprung seat I had took it on its inaugural ride using the same route I had done on the Gtech bike.
The difference was simply amazing. Gone had the harsh riding experience or the hard work riding up the steep hills that surround my home, the Juicy Bike delivered an amazing ride, tackling the hills in its stride, the suspension smoothing out the bumps in the poor road surfaces and putting a silly grin of satisfaction on my face. I had been lucky, if the Gtech's frame at 21" hadn't been too big for me I would had kept it in ignorance but now I am a proud owner of a much more superior bike and for roughly the same price. Thank you, Juicy. I will update the review in the next month or so but for now I really recommend anyone considering buying an electric bike to try a Juicy Bike, you will not be disappointed.

As we’ve said, we won’t deny our own bias – but it’s precisely this faith in our bikes that make sharing the above independent review an absolute pleasure.

Objective comparison is great, and an independent review is even better, but there’s no substitute for trying out an electric bike for yourself.
Why not  test ride a Juicy Bike at a stockist near you  with expertese and honest advice about which is the best bike for you.
